There are four potential scenarios are being proposed by bidders trying to buy TikTok.
It is extremely difficult to come up with a plan that would satisfy both President Trump and President Xi. The US wants ByteDance to divest the its assets, while China has declared that the software powering the app is a restricted export.
One option would be to exclude the software covered as a restricted export from the sale. Other possibilities include seeking Chinese approval for the sale of the software, licensing it from ByteDance, or getting approval from U.S. regulators for a transition period.
My partner, Alfred Chuang at Race Capital shared his thoughts on the situation on Bloomberg with Emily Chang. Alfred sold BEA Systems, his previous company, to Oracle for $8.5 billion.
